Windows play a critical role in home safety, especially for young children. Preventing falls out of windows is equally as important as learning how to use one in an emergency. Utilize our helpful tips to make sure your family understands the basics of window safety.

Keep windows shut when children are around.

Falling through an open window can cause serious injury. Keeping your windows closed and locked along with careful supervision is the safest way to protect children from a window-related mishap. If you do need to open a window for ventilation, position your furniture away from the window or choose one that children cannot easily reach.

Don’t rely on insect screens as a safety measure.

Insect screens are designed to provide ventilation while keeping insects out. They won’t, however, keep children inside. If you have a window six feet or higher from the ground, we recommend utilizing window stops or guards that limit window openings to four inches or less.

Determine a fire escape plan.

Make a plan for your family in the case of a fire and practice it regularly. To be best prepared, include two methods of escape from every room. One method is often climbing out of a window, so it’s important to teach your kids how to safely use a window under emergency circumstances.
